As we boarded the plane back to the States, we were greeted by a sea of green shirts, indicating the return of a missions trip. It was amazing to see how many different groups of Americans were going down to Honduras for mission trips. All of the passengers were getting situated and I happened to overhear the 23 year old girl in front of me perusing a map of the Americas. The 40ish year old woman next to her was edumacating her on the difference between Central America and South America. The fact that she thought Mexico was in South America was a hint of her brilliance. After studying the map a little longer, the two green shirted women continued to converse:
23: “I don’t see Spain…”
40ish: Looks at her with one of those are-you-really-that-ignorant looks. She proceeded to flip through the magazine for a map of Europe. “It’s in Europe,” while pointing to Spain.
23: “Right. I knew that.”
Sure you did. Are we as Americans really that dumb? Yes, yes we are.
