Genesis 16

I love this chapter for the simple fact that it reminds me that God uses screw-ups. Abram was close with God (He actually appears face to face with Abraham in the 18th chapter), yet when he didn’t have any children, his wife convinced him to have a child with her maidservant. Please remember that in the previous chapter God made a covenant with Abram that He would make Abram’s descendants like the stars, or He would slaughter Himself in two like the animals. Abram must have had a short memory. As soon as Hagar the maidservant found out she was pregnant, she despised Sarai. Sarai then blamed Abram and mistreated Hagar, causing her to run away. That is what I would call a dysfunctional family. And God still used the situation for his glory.
