I love my students - 2006-11-22 07:18

8:22 am. Students enter the classroom, preparing for their half-day before Thanksgiving Break. A few are sitting around chatting quietly, piddling around on their iBooks. I notice a student with earphones on (likely listening to music from her iBook, which is against school rules).

“Sorry Sally. You’ll have to put away your headphones. No music.”

“But Mr. Z, it’s before school!”

“It doesn’t matter. We aren’t allowed to listen to music while on school grounds,” I respond.

Sally puts her headphones away without much protest. Billy turns on his iTunes (but forgot his volume was turned all the way up from whatever he was using his iBook for last night). I get about 1.5 seconds of Ciara before he finds the mute button. Before I can even respond to this, I hear Sally from my left:

“You are gender racist!” she yells.

I can’t even get my brain around the fact that she yelled “racist” (for we are both from the same racial background). Kids around the room snicker from the fact that she used the term “gender racist.”

“What?” I quizzically respond.

“Well I couldn’t just say you are racist because its a different kind,” Sally answers.

“It’s called ‘sexist’,” John retorts from across the room in between chuckles.

Sally sits with a blank look on her face. I don’t think she really gets his point.

I love my students…
