Stars on World Cup Jerseys - 2006-07-02 15:42

If you know me at all you know that I have been enjoying every minute of the World Cup this year (yes, I love my DVR). One thing I have noticed (besides the fact that the refs were awful in the first round) were that some of the jerseys had stars above the countries emblems. Joe Cole has one gold star above England’s emblem.

While living in Turkey, I found out that every star on a club team’s jersey stood for five championship victories. It was quite a big deal to receive another star because it takes a minimum of five years, if you are lucky enough to win the championship every year.

But that couldn’t be true for the World Cup. I came to find out that every star represents how many times your country won the World Cup. I thought that was kind of a neat bonus for the team. Brazil has five stars, although not as “cool looking” as England’s or France’s one gold star.
